Industrial Engineer

Stow, OH
Full Time
Mid Level
Summary of Position
The Industrial Engineer is responsible for the industrialization of assigned Anderson-engineered product, building the manufacturing routings and standards that define how each part is made and making sure parts can be built efficiently, correctly and to an accurate standard. This is a hands-on role that spends much of each day on the plant floor working with machinists, welders, fabricators and assemblers.
The Industrial Engineer creates and maintains routings (operations, work centers, process times, setup times, outside services and raw material), reviews designs for manufacturability, dispositions nonconforming product in line with Anderson International processes and standards, and supports the continuous improvement, 5S and lean manufacturing efforts led by the Quality & Continuous Improvement department.
Scope
  • Assigned Anderson-engineered product, including engineer-to-order (ETO), configure-to-order (CTO) and make-to-stock (MTS) work, and spare parts manufactured in-house.
  • All manufacturing processes: machining, welding, fabricating, assembly, heat treat and grinding, including processes performed by outside service suppliers.
  • Routings, standards, outside service operations and raw material definitions in the ERP for assigned product.
  • Works directly with machinists, welders, fabricators and assemblers, and with Design Engineering, Operations, Quality and Supply Chain.
  • Role requires significant, daily time on the manufacturing plant floor.
Responsibilities
Industrialization & Design for Manufacturability
  • Review new and revised drawings for manufacturability before release; document recommended changes that reduce cost, operations, setups, unnecessarily tight tolerances and lead time without affecting form, fit or function.
  • Create the operation sequence and work instructions for machining, welding, fabrication, heat treat, grinding and assembly, including the inspection points required by the drawing.
  • Identify tooling, fixturing, gauging and equipment needs for new product and work with Operations and Programming to have them in place.
  • Support make vs. buy analysis with cost, capacity and lead-time data, and support new part launches, including first-article runs on the floor.
  • Helps create and institute work instructions & Standard operating Procedures (SOP’s)
Routings, Standards & Costing Accuracy
  • Create and maintain routings for all manufactured product, including helping establish outside services and raw materials.
  • Enter and maintain operations, work centers, process (run) times, setup times and bills of material in the ERP, and keep them current when processes, equipment or drawings change.
  • Help process Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) by updating routings and standards accurately and on time, including updating existing work in process (WIP) and the final disposition of WIP affected by the change.
  • Define raw material for each manufactured part (material grade/specification, form, size, cut length and quantity per part) and verify raw material cost on the bill of material.
  • Help establish outside service operations (e.g., heat treat, plating, coating, grinding) in the routing with the correct supplier, specification, lead time and cost, in coordination with Supply Chain.
  • Conduct time studies and floor observations; compare actual performance to standard, document findings and correct inaccurate standards.
  • Provide documented labor, outside service and material estimates for quotes when requested.
Nonconforming Product
  • Disposition nonconforming product to use as is, rework/repair to manufacture, scrap or return to vendor, while ensuring every deviation is captured and documented in alignment with Anderson International processes and standards.
  • Provide engineering justification for each disposition, including the impact on form, fit, function and customer requirements.
  • Create repair and rework work orders for nonconforming product, with clear rework and repair instructions, and follow them through to completion and re-inspection.
  • Participate in root cause and corrective action, and update drawings, routings, work instructions and standards so the same nonconformance does not repeat.
Continuous Improvement Support (5S & Lean)
  • Support the continuous improvement, 5S and lean manufacturing objectives led by the Quality & Continuous Improvement department.
  • Support improvement projects on setup reduction, cycle time, flow, layout, ergonomics, safety and quality, and update routings and standards to reflect the results.
  • Gather and analyze labor, scrap and throughput data to identify improvement opportunities and verify results.
  • Support equipment installations, capital project justifications and layout changes, including updating routings when work moves to new equipment.
Shop Floor Support
  • Support the Manufacturing Manager, Production Managers and direct labor with technical questions on drawings, work instructions and standard operating procedures for equipment, and resolve or escalate issues promptly to avoid holding up production.
  • Train operators on new or changed processes and work instructions.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering, or related field. Associate degree with strong hands-on manufacturing experience will be considered.
Experience
  • 3+ years of manufacturing or industrial engineering experience in a metalworking environment.
  • Prior knowledge of machining, welding, fabricating, assembly, heat treat and grinding is required.
  • Experience building routings and bills of material, setting labor standards and defining raw material.
  • Experience dispositioning nonconforming product preferred.
  • Experience with moderately large, fairly complex production of mechanical capital equipment is required.
  • Experience in a low-volume, high-mix or capital equipment environment preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T; working knowledge of CAD (SolidWorks or similar).
  • Understanding of CNC machining and programming concepts.
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems, including routing and bill of material functions (Epicor experience a plus).
  • Root cause problem-solving tools; working knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S.
  • Proficient in Excel; organized, detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Communicates well with the shop floor and with engineering; comfortable getting hands-on.

  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional travel to suppliers and customers as needed.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability
Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029
Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
